I create ceramic sculpture that is somewhat abstract, somewhat narrative. Each piece asks to be explored visually, tactilely, and if it accomplishes what I hope, with the psyche as well.
It is the ability of transformation which draws me to clay as a medium. The initial malleability of the material can quickly take a concept and move it into form. The form can be left with a simple sensuous line, carved, leaving sharpened edges, or color melted over the surface with a tempering heat.
This transformation is integral…but not strictly in the physical sense. There is, for me, a metaphysical element balanced with the physical and as long as these remain in a sort of balance, a piece of art may be created and explored.
